Most of the hotels in Copacabana are located directly on the beach front, but there are less expensive hotels located 1 - 2 blocks away. Because of the large number of hotels on the beach, there is a lot of price competition and one can find bargains.

Rates for hotels in Copacabana are less expensive then hotels of the same caliber in Ipanema. That's because there are many more hotels in Copacabana Beach than in Ipanema. The beach front in Copacabana is lined with hotels, while Ipanema Beach is mostly lined with high end apartments. Also there are large number of budget hotels in Copacabana, almost all located at least 2 blocks from the beach.

Copacabana Beach is quite long with all classes of hotels spread up and down the promenade. Generally speaking, however, the nicest parts of Copacabana are on each end of the beach, up towards Leme Beach or down towards Posto 6 and Arpoador.

Sofitel Rio de Janeiro: $$$$

The 388 room Sofitel is considered one of the finest luxury hotels in Copacabana and in Rio de Janeiro. It is situated on a very nice part of the beach at Posto 5 near the border of Arpoador and Ipanema. All of the Sofitel's rooms have balconies. The more expensive luxury rooms and suites afford ocean views. The Sofitel has 2 restaurants, including the renowned Le Pre Catelan restaurant which serves French haute cuisine.

The Horse's Neck Bar has an African motif and a covered terrace that overlooks the beach. On weekends you will find first rate live Bossa Nova and popular Brazilian music out on the terrace.

The Sofitel has 2 swimming pools, one of which is located on the roof. Sunbathers can relax in a comfortable chaise longue while taking in the gorgeous views of the beach with Sugar Loaf Mountain in the background. Waiters from the rooftop bar are at your beck and call.

The water is very calm at this end of the beach, as the waves lap into an area where small fishing boats are docked. Get up early one morning to watch the fishermen go out to sea, or come by in the early afternoon when they return to sell their catch at the docks. Within a short walking distance is the entrance for Forte Copacabana, a historical site that should not be missed.

JW Marriott Hotel Rio de Janeiro: $$$$

This luxury hotel has reserved a spot near the top of the worldwide Marriott Hotel chain. Exquisite attention to detail is given to nearly every amenity and service offered, making this one of the best hotels in Copacabana. It is consistently highly rated in both trade journals and high end tourism publications.

It's a large hotel with 245 rooms and offers just about every service you can imagine. If you are an American who is looking for the comfort and style of a luxury hotel back home, than this is the place for you.

The spacious and well appointed rooms include beds fitted with down comforters, custom duvets, and high count cotton linens. Evening turn down service, daily newspaper delivery, concierge desk, and 24 hour room service are just a few of the comforts to enjoy while staying here.

The executive lounge offers complimentary daily breakfast & happy hour. The hotel boasts two fine restaurants including a Japanese sushi & sake bar, and a rather sophisticated Mediterranean restaurant.

The JW Marriott has a Spa offering Zen massage and facials and a gorgeous roof top pool that offers stunning views of all of Copacabana Beach.

Miramar Palace Hotel: $$$

The rather tall and narrow Miramar Palace is a very comfortable first class hotel with 14 floors and 156 rooms. Many of the rooms afford an ocean view but do not have balconies. The hotel was renovated in 2002 and has a sleek and polished appearance.

Guests are welcomed upon arrival in the comfortable lobby bar with a welcome complimentary drink. It has a nice restaurant that offers a wonderful breakfast buffet which is included in the room rate. The restaurant serves dinner, but there may be better dining options away from the hotel.

The rooms are modern and spacious, especially those with an ocean view. The Miramar offers the usual full services, has a fitness center with sauna, a rooftop sunbathing area, but no swimming pool.

This hotel books up early and can get a bit expensive in the high season, as its consistent, reliable service, nice rooms, and coveted spot on Copacabana Beach at Posto 5, make it highly sought after by both foreign and Brazilian tourists.

Golden Tulip Continental Hotel: $$$

Of the hotels in Copacabana located a block away from the beach, the Golden Tulip Continental is one of the nicer ones. It sits on a quiet tree lined street at the upper end of Copacabana Beach in a tranquil section of the Leme neighborhood.

It's a four star hotel that offers reasonable rates due to the fact it is a block off the beach front, making it a real bargain. The Continental is part of the European Golden Tulip International Hotel chain, which has recently purchased and renovated 3 hotels in Copacabana (See Tulip Inn further below). In 2000 they also built a boutique hotel in Ipanema.

It's a tall hotel with 275 rooms and 21 floors. Because of its height, the roof top pool area provides great views of Morro do Leme and Copacabana Beach down to Forte Copacabana. You also have a clear view of Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado Mountain.

The Golden Tulip was formerly a residence hotel, so the rooms are spacious. The hotel is popular with families and groups of tourists as it's off the hectic Avenida Atlantica and makes for an easy place from which to begin sightseeing.

There are a number of excellent restaurants within short walking distance of the hotel, including Shirley which we rate in our Traditional Brazilian Restaurant page. Also, a very nice small farmer's market is set up just up the street on weekday mornings.

Tulip Inn: $$

The 3 star Tulip Inn is part of the Golden Tulip chain of hotels in Copacabana and is located on the ocean, at about the middle of Copacabana Beach. It was renovated in 2004 to a nice standard, and is one of the lower priced hotels on the Avenida Atlantica.

It has 112 rooms, many with ocean view, and all equipped with air conditioning, cable TV, safe, high speed Internet connection, telephone, and a minibar. The hotel facilities include a restaurant for breakfast, lobby bar, room service, and fitness center with a sauna. The hotel also offers beach service in front of the hotel (towels, umbrellas, chairs, snacks, and drinks).

Because of its recent renovation, it's much more modern and cleaner than many similarly priced 3 star hotels on Copacabana Beach. The staff is very friendly and attentive, making the Tulip Inn a pleasant place to stay.
