New Years Eve 2012 in Rio de Janeiro

2 Million People Attended !

The New Years Eve 2012 celebration in Rio de Janeiro may very well be the world's largest party of its type. This year, "Ano Novo" or "Réveillon", as it's called in Brazilian Portuguese, drew crowds of up to two million people to the 1.5 mile crescent shaped Copacabana Beach.

If you missed it, we carried the midnight fireworks show live on this website! Tune in next year and we'll provide live video of the Rio de Janeiro New Year's eve fireworks once again.

This annual party in Rio is second in size only to the Carnival festivities which take place in February. Most of the party goers wore white to bring luck and prosperity in the new year.

The theme of this New Years Eve 2012 party was "sustainability", to kick off "Rio +20", the 2012 United Nations Conference that will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, some 20 years after Eco92. Sustainable development of the planet is the goal of Rio +20 conference.

As in years past, there were 4 sound stages set up along Copacabana Beach, with the main "Palco Sol" (Sun Stage) located directly across from the famous Copacabana Palace Hotel.

The DJ and live music started at 6pm and continued until just before midnight. At 11:55pm, revelers were treated to a five minute light and laser show, followed by a phenomenal 16 minute firework display, launched from 11 barges anchored in the ocean just off Copacabana Beach. After the fireworks show, the music and party continued until 4am!

Although there were 4 stages providing music and entertainment, the main stage was the place to be, as artists included Brazilian Samba diva Beth Carvalho (10:30pm), international superstar DJ David Guetta (1:40am), and the 12 time Carnaval champion Beija Flor drumming band (3am).

Mapped Projection Stage Facade The main stage at this New Years Eve 2012 included a backdrop of "Mapped Projection", a facade displaying three dimensional images of color and light, still and moving objects, which promoted the eco-theme of sustainability (see image at right).
