Rio de Janeiro Pousadas

aka Guesthouses, Inns, or B&Bs

You should consider staying in one of Rio de Janeiro's fine Pousadas as an alternative to a standard hotel room or rental apartment.  By doing so, you may get a better feel for the "real" Brazil, and quite often at a lower cost.

Pousadas (pronounced "po-zaada") are the Brazilian versions of Inns, Guesthouses, or B&Bs.  They range in size from about one or two guest rooms to over a dozen.  They differ from hostels in that the rooms have a private bath and are usually decorated and furnished to a higher standard.  The best Pousadas are located in residential areas Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana and Santa Teresa.

They are often old mansions converted in a guesthouse and have amenities such as common sitting areas, balconies, and occasionally a swimming pool.  The fact that these are often former large private homes or multilevel penthouse apartments, provides the guest a more intimate stay than in a tourist class hotel.

Larger Pousadas have the feel of a smaller hotel in that the guest can be more anonymous. You can come and go without having to socialize with the proprietor or other guests, or you can be as sociable as you like.  Getting to know the innkeeper often leads to obtaining inside information about current happenings and great nearby restaurants. Most of these Inns have a 24 hour security or desk clerk to allow you entrance after hours.

Like most Brazilian hotels, breakfast is included in the daily rate, and there's usually no minimum stay required (outside of the Carnaval and  New Years weeks).  Housekeeping if offered every day and the re-use of bath towels is encouraged.  Local touring information will be offered with the tour companies providing door to door transportation.  The rates depend on the location and amenities offered, and are often on par with 3 star Rio de Janeiro hotels and one bedroom vacation rental apartments.
